Sister Clare Edward Whalen, OSF
Of the Sisters of St. Francis of Mary Immaculate, died at Corinne Dolan Alzheimer Center of Heather Hill, Chardon, Ohio, on June 22, 2007, at the age of 84. She was a member of the Joliet Franciscans for 62 years. Born in Peru, Illinois, and baptized Mary Ann, Sr. Clare Edward grew up in Streator, Illinois. She was preceded in death by her parents, Edward V. and Dorothy G. (McLaughlin) Whalen. She is survived by cousins and her Joliet Franciscan sisters.
Sister Clare Edward earned a Bachelor of Arts at the College of St. Francis, Joliet, and Master of Arts in Speech Pathology from Marquette University, Milwaukee. She ministered, first as a speech instructor, and later as a Professor of Speech Pathology at the College of St. Francis from 1948 until 1983. During much of that time and for several years in semi-retirement, Sr. Clare Edward also worked with many clients as a speech pathologist in her own clinic. Over the course of her professional life, she continuously studied new developments and techniques in speech pathology at many universities, including Catholic University, Northwestern, Iowa, University of San Francisco and the University of London. In her retirement, Sr. Clare Edward lived in Alzheimer units at Resurrection Life Center, Chicago, and Corinne Dolan Center in Ohio. She generously willed her brain to the Rush Alzheimer Study at Rush Medical School, Chicago.
The wake will be at Our Lady of Angels Retirement Home, 1201 Wyoming Avenue, Joliet, Ill. (Wyoming and Rt. 30) on Wednesday, June 27, 2007, from 2:00 - 6:45 p.m., with a prayer service at 4:45 p.m. and Mass of Christian Burial at 7:00 p.m. Burial will be Thursday, June 28, at 9:00 a.m. from Our Lady of Angels to Resurrection Cemetery in Romeoville, IL.
