Jerry William Banister, age 78, of Joliet, and formerly of Romeoville, IL and Prescott Valley, AZ passed away peacefully, Friday, January 5, 2018 at home, surrounded by his devoted family.
Born March 1, 1939 in Shelbyville, IN he was the son of the late Fred and Florence (nee Hyte) Banister.
Surviving are his beloved wife of 57 years, Betty (nee Vincent) Banister; two children, Melody Jean (John) Janda and Roger (Annie) Banister; five grandchildren, Ashley Wall, Adam Wall, Jaden Banister, Drake Fellows and Carter Banister; two sisters, Audrey (the late Myron) Pennington and Sally (the late Walton) McDonald; one brother, Vernel Banister; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Clarence and Paul; and two sisters, Thelma Graver and Betty LeGrand.
Jerry dedicated his life to serving the Lord in numerous capacities. He worked alongside his wife in numerous youth ministries, and was the founder of the Bible Baptist Christian Academy in Romeoville. He also served many years as caretaker of Camp Manitoumi in Lowpoint, IL. Later in life, he worked as a contractor in the commercial construction industry.
Jerry was an active member of Shorewood Baptist Church, and enjoyed volunteering for numerous organizations including Meals on Wheels. He also loved woodworking, especially making things and sharing his talents with loved ones and friends. He was a man of great faith whose love for the Lord and his family will never be forgotten.
A Memorial Gathering for Jerry Banister will be held Saturday, January 13, 2018 from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the Fred C. Dames Funeral Home, 3200 Black at Essington Roads, Joliet, where a Memorial Service will be held 4:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorials in his name to Shorewood Baptist Church, 1025 Country Drive, Shorewood, IL 60404 would be appreciated.
