Obituary of Gloria L. Horn

Gloria L. Horn (nee Heil) Age 82, of Channahon, Illinois, entered into eternal rest in the arms of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on March 16, 2017. She was born June 11, 1934, in Marissa, Illinois, to Gomer and Lorene (nee Keith) Heil. She grew up in Granite City, Illinois, a graduate of Granite City High School and received her Bachelor's degree in Education from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, IL, where she met her future husband Robert Horn. She later earned her Masters degree in Education Administration from Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, Illinois. She married Robert J. Horn in 1957 and moved to Joliet, Illinois, where they made their home and raised their family. She taught for 23 years for the Illinois Department of Corrections, retired, then enjoyed a second career as a tax preparer for H & R Block for 23 years. She was a charter member of Zion Baptisit Church, serving the Lord as a Sunday School and Training Union teacher, Women's Missionary Union leader, and secretary. She was later a member of the Westview Baptist Church, where she continued to serve as a teacher, secretary, and treasurer. She served for several years as a secretary for the Three Rivers Baptist Association. She was an avid reader and enjoyed classic movies, puzzles and loved to knit and crochet. Survived by two daughters, Kathryn (Jack) Tierney of Steger, and Audrey (Robert) Cabrera of Channahon, a son, Grant (Marjorie) Horn of Wilmington, three granddaughters, Irene Horn, Amy (Jay) Mumm, and Olivia (Mike Lucas) Kelley; three grandsons, Jordan (Jayleen Tirado) Cabrera, Clinton Cabrera, and Joseph Horn; great-grandchildren, Evelyn Clark, Xavier Cabrera, Mikayla Mumm, Jacob Mumm and Ava Lucas. Her sister, Joyce (Robert) Churchwell, her brother, Jon (Debra) Heil, both of Granite City, several nieces, nephews and her devoted care-givers, Meghan Sweet and Louvada "Moe" Barber, also survive. Preceded in death by her husband, Robert J. Horn; her son, Matthew Horn, and her parents, Gomer and Lorene Heil. Funeral services for Gloria L. Horn will be held Tuesday March 21, 2017, 10:00 a.m. at the Fred C. Dames Funeral Home, 3200 Black Rd. (at Essington Rd.) Joliet. Interment will follow in Woodlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.
