Obituary of Maria Tellez-Carlson

Maria Téllez-Carlson, age 50, of Plainfield, and formerly of Lockport, passed away peacefully, Tuesday, June 6, 2017 at her home surrounded by her loving family.  She had courageously battled ovarian cancer for the past four years.

Born August 6, 1966 in Queréndaro, Michoacán, Mexico, she was the daughter of the late Joel and Luz (Vallejo) Téllez.  She moved to Lockport from Mexico at the age of eight, and attended Fairmont Grade School, Lockport High School, and was a 1987 graduate of Western Illinois University.

Maria was employed by the Illinois Department of Corrections for 24 years, most recently as a Public Service Administrator for the Deputy Director of the Northern Region.  She was the recipient of numerous awards and was recognized by former Director Salvador Godinez for her dedication and professionalism, and for having a positive influence on the Department.  She previously worked for the Will County Sheriff’s Department, and J. C. Penney, Carson’s and Macy’s Department Stores.

She was a member of St. Mary Immaculate Catholic Church, the Wilmington Recreation Club and the Providence Women’s Club.  A passionate Dallas Cowboys and Chicago White Sox fan, she enjoyed following all Providence High School sports, especially football and baseball, and was also a professional wrestling enthusiast.  Her other interests included cooking, baking, attending music concerts, and enjoying a glass of wine.

Maria was a loving wife, mother, sister and aunt.  She enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her cherished daughter, Andrea, of whom she was extremely proud.  She was a strong supporter of education and believed deeply in her faith.

She is survived by her beloved husband, Andrew Carlson, who she married December 23, 1992 in Crest Hill; her daughter, Andrea M.
