Obituary of Obdulia "Esther" Bernardo
Obdulia “Esther” Bernardo, age 87, of Joliet, formerly of Addison, IL, passed away peacefully Sunday, August 2, 2026, at her home. She was born September 5, 1938, in Havana, Cuba to the late Rosa “Maria” (Vallya) and Cervando Garcia.
Born and raised in Cuba, she immigrated to the United States in 1968 in search of a better future, carrying with her the traditions, values, and resilience that defined her life. Though old-fashioned in many ways, she found joy in the simple things. She loved collecting knickknacks that filled her home with warmth and personality. She delighted family and friends with her singing and spirited performances on the castanets.
Esther was a devoted mother who worked tirelessly to provide for her daughter, always putting her family's needs before her own. Later in life, she found her greatest happiness in being a grandmother. She lovingly helped care for her grandchildren, creating lasting memories through her unwavering presence, affection, and support.
She was truly one of a kind and was a woman with a wonderful sense of humor and a playful spirit. Known to be quite the "character," she had a unique way of making those around her smile. One of her favorite playful traditions was teaching her family made-up words, insisting they were authentic Spanish. These lighthearted moments became treasured family stories that continue to bring laughter and joy.
Survived by her loving daughter, Lilia Bernardo; beloved son, Dom Bernardo; dear grandchildren, Jessica (Michael Webber) Isassi, Daniel Isassi, Krista (Richard) Iovan, and Michael Bernardo; and adoring great-grandchildren, Madison, Andrew, Kaylee, and Michael Webber and Lydia Iovan.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Domingo Bernardo and granddaughter, Kassie Isassi.
Memorial Visitation for Obdulia “Esther” Bernardo will be Friday, August 7, from 3:00 p.m. until time of the Memorial Service at 5:00 p.m., at the Fred C. Dames Funeral Home, 3200 Black Road, Joliet, IL 60431. Future inurnment will be at Resurrection Cemetery, Romeoville.
