Obituary of Gustavo "Gus" Sanchez
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Gustavo “Gus” Sanchez, who passed away peacefully with family by his side on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, at the age of 78.
Born on April 12, 1948, in Zaragoza, Mexico, Gus lived a life marked by love, resilience, and devotion to his family and friends.
Gus was drafted on March 29, 1968. He served in the United States Army First Calvary Division during the Vietnam War. He quickly moved through the ranks from E1 to E5. Gus received many medals including the Bronze Star with a “V” for valor, Vietnam Service Campaign Medal, and the Vietnam Service Medal.
He was known for his kindness, humor, generosity, strong work ethic, and his love for his beloved cats, Molly and Midnight, as well as his passion for classic cars and boats. He touched the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Gus is survived by his wife of 58 years, Jane (nee Ireland) Sanchez; his children, Jeffrey Sanchez and Michelle (nee Sanchez) Liberty; his beloved grandchildren, Nathan and Maxwell Liberty; his siblings, Abdon (Olivia) Sanchez, Josephine Trzinski, Horatio Sanchez, Jose (Carol) Sanchez, George (Eusebia) Sanchez, and Susan Sanchez; and many nieces and nephews who will forever cherish his love, guidance, and the memories they shared.
Gus was preceded in death by his parents, Jose Sanchez and Belen (nee Mayorga) Sanchez; and his brother, Edward Sanchez.
Throughout the health challenges he faced in his later months, Gus showed remarkable strength and resilience. Even as his health declined, he met each challenge with the same strength that defined his life. He was surrounded by the love of his family, who remained by his side and cherished every moment with him.
Visitation for Gus will be Wednesday, August 12, 2026, from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Fred C. Dames Funeral Home 3200 Black Rd (at Essington Rd) Joliet. A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, August 13, 2026, at the funeral home chapel at 10:00 a.m. Committal Prayers and Inurnment will follow at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery where full Military Honors will be accorded by the U.S. Army and the Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery Memorial Squad.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Amyloidosis Research Consortium (ARC), or that those wishing to honor his memory simply spend time with the people they love.
Gus will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever carried in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
