Obituary of George M. Stofan

Of Joliet, IL, passed away on Sunday May 13, 2018, at Silver Cross Hospital at the age of 92.  George was born in Joliet, the son of the late John and Elizabeth (nee Mati) Stofan, and was a lifelong resident.  He was a graduate of Joliet Township High School with the Class of 1943, and attended Joliet Junior College and Lewis University. George was a proud U. S. Army Veteran of WWII. Was the former owner of the Camper Shop in downtown Joliet and former employee of Illinois Securities in the investment division.  In 1978 George formed a partnership with Robert Agazzi in establishing Stofan, Agazzi & Company Inc.

George was a founding member and past President of the Joliet Exchange Club, past President and member of the Joliet Country Club, as well as a member of the Knights of Columbus Council #382, the Joliet Elks Lodge #296 and numerous other civic organizations.

Although George was an avid golfer, he was most happy being surrounded by his family.

George is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Irene (nee Motta) Stofan of Joliet; his three children, George F. (Mary) Stofan, Irene (Jeffrey) Celander, and Mark (Debby) Stofan, all of Joliet; seven grandchildren, Kathleen Stofan (Edward Young), Joan (Dustin Vilt) Stofan, Richard Stofan, Elizabeth (James) Hart, Geoffrey (Aimee) Celander, Stephanie Celander, and Laurel Stofan; eight great grandchildren, Annie Young, Taylor and Mckenzie Vilt, Aiden Hart, Griffin, Skylar, Nolan and Carson Schultz; one sister, Elizabeth (the late Lucien) Miner of North Carolina; one brother, John (Laura) Stofan of Joliet; his sister-in-law, Catherine (William) Hart of Chicago; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He is preceded by his parents; his granddaughter, Kayley Irene Stofan (2004); one sister, Mary Ellen Ciuffini; his sister-in-law, Frances (James) Bossingham; and his nephew, Michael Stofan.

Funeral Services for George M. Stofan will be held on Friday, May 18, 2018 at 9:15 a.m. from the Fred C. Dames Funeral Home, 3200 Black at Essington Rds., Joliet to the Cathedral of St. Raymond Nonnatus for Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 10:00 a.m.  Interment will follow in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials in his name to Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital, the Cathedral of St. Raymond Grade School, or Joliet Catholic Academy would be appreciated.
