Alma and my mother Amalia were next door neighbors. For years, they talked on the phone daily and Alma would come over to sit by the porch and occasionally have lunch with my mother. Nothing out of the ordinary with one exception…my mom spoke little English though she understood more than she spoke. Somehow a loving friendship flourished. She’d have me call Kim and Alma if she hadn’t heard from her in a day or two. Always worried that something happened because Alma lived on her own. I’d answer but mom so do you and Kim watches over her like I do you. No, no you call now! Alma would make her day with a visit, a call and if she ever told her she liked my mom’s cooking, my mom would talk about it for days. I know they are once again enjoying their company in heaven sitting in a garden enjoying the flowers of a heavenly porch. How fitting that they departed from the same place Lightways Hospice. She touched our lives forever. The Calabrese family.
