Obituary of Roy Dean Spohn

Roy Dean Spohn, age 76, of Joliet, Illinois and formerly Oak Park, Illinois, passed peacefully, Tuesday February 18, 2025 at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, IL.

Roy was born in Battle Creek, MI, on April 10, 1948, a son of the late Alta (Millious) and Homer Spohn. He was a graduate of Battle Creek Central High School. He completed his undergraduate studies and went on to earn a Master’s Degree from Chicago State University.

Roy served his Country proudly in the United States Marine Corps. He was honorably discharged in July of 1970.

He is the beloved father of Jaye (Barney) McGrane and John W. "Jack" Spohn; loving grandfather of August and Tessa Paulson and Charles, Timothy, and Zoe McGrane; dear brother of Tina Smith, Rick (Nancy), Steve, and Mike Spohn. Many nieces and nephews also survive.

Roy is preceded in death by his parents and siblings.

A lifelong Michigan Wolverines football fan, Roy also loved Notre Dame football. In his leisure time, Roy enjoyed golfing. He was a retired PE teacher at the high school and grade school level who also coached and mentored many a youth throughout his career.

All friends and relatives are invited to gather at the Fred C. Dames Funeral Home, 3200 Black Rd (at Essington Rd) on Friday, February 28, 2025, from 9:00 a.m. until a prayer service begins at 10:45 a.m. Inurnment with military honors will follow at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood, IL.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in Roy's name to your favorite charity would be appreciated.
