Obituary of Eugene Joseph Jevitz
Eugene Joseph Jevitz
Our dad and husband, Eugene Joseph Jevitz, was diagnosed with cancer many years ago and faced the battle with unwavering strength and a smile that never faltered, determined to continue living life surrounded by his family and friends. A beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and respected member of the Joliet community, Gene passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 26, 2025, at the age of 85, with his loving family by his side. He was born on February 16, 1940, to the late John and Charlotte (nee Witczak) Jevitz.
A lifelong resident of Joliet, Gene’s roots ran deep in the fabric of the community, where he was a steadfast presence for many years. He attended St. Joseph Grade School, graduated from Joliet Catholic High School, and furthered his education at Joliet Junior College, all while forming lasting connections that would shape his future. Gene’s life was one of service, both to his country and to the people around him. As a proud veteran of the United States Marine Corps, his dedication to serving others was a hallmark of his character, evident in everything he did. Whether through his military service or his contributions to the Joliet community, Gene consistently put others first, earning the admiration and respect of all who knew him.
Gene was the proud owner and operator of “Gene’s Barbershop” in Joliet for nearly 30 years, a cherished and iconic establishment beloved by locals for its friendly and welcoming atmosphere, skilled service, and warm community spirit. Known for his expert barbering and genuine care for his clients, Gene built lasting relationships with many stories and laughs that spanned generations. After retiring from the barbershop, he continued his professional journey with enthusiasm, working as a producer at John Manner Insurance, where his knowledge, personal connections and dedication made him a respected figure in the industry.
Gene’s talents and expertise also extended to public service, where he made significant contributions as the Deputy Director of Accounting Revenue with the Illinois Secretary of State for 20 years, working tirelessly to ensure efficiency and accountability. His passion for helping others was further evident during his five years as Chief of Operations for the Will County State’s Attorney’s office, where he played a key role by securing a bus for the Will County VAC to ensure the Veterans had received transportation to Hines Hospital for much needed health care.
During his tenure on the Will County Board, Gene was a passionate advocate for Sunnyhill Nursing Home, ensuring the delivery of services to our elderly citizens. His deep-rooted connection to the area was also reflected in his involvement with the Old Timers Baseball Association, where he helped preserve the legacy established by his father and celebrate the local history and spirit of the game. Gene’s contributions, both professional and personal, left an indelible mark in Joliet and the people who were fortunate enough to know him.
In addition to his professional accomplishments, Gene was a devout Catholic whose faith was a guiding force throughout his life. He was a lifelong parishioner of the Cathedral of St. Raymond Nonnatus, a place that held special meaning for him as it was where his children received their education. Gene's firm commitment to his faith led him to serve as the past president of the St. Raymond’s school board, and one of the first Lay Eucharistic Ministers in the Church. His deep connection to the church and its community was a cornerstone of his character, shaping the way he lived and the way he interacted with those around him. His faith was a force that inspired his kindness, generosity, and sense of duty to others.
Gene always had a nice golden tan. He was extremely lucky during his retirement, to enjoy his condo with his wife, on the beautiful Siesta Key Beach, in Florida. His sense of humor and infectious laugh brought joy to his family and to all who knew him. His warm personality made him a beloved father, grandfather and great grandfather. Many a day, we would be awakened to his singing “You Gotta Get Up in the Morning!!”, or his favorite dinner time song…Che La Luna “C′ 'na luna mezz′u mare”. He was known to break out dancing and singing to another favorite, “Roll Out the Barrel”. A weekend polka dance with dad always brought us laughs. He enjoyed sharing stories of the good old days with friends and family, and he always had a story to tell.
Gene is survived by his loving wife of 31 years, Donna (nee Clark) Jevitz; his four children, Gina (James) Glasgow, Timothy Jevitz, Joy Kaminski, and Jodie (Dave) Dziuba; grandchildren, James (Jillian) Glasgow, Nickolas (Mallory) Columbus, Cody Columbus, Dolan Glasgow, Deidre (Brad) Paddock, Timothy (Ann) Jevitz, Kelsie (Connor) Runge, Ryan (fiancée Lindsay Kent) Jevitz, McKensie (fiancé Joseph Patek) Jevitz, Michael Kaminski, Brandon Kaminski, Drake Kaminski, Joseph Dziuba, and Sofia Dziuba; seven great-grandchildren; sister, Jeri (Stu) Christensen; and his brother and sister-in-law, Mark and Jeannie Clark. He also leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends.
