Obituary of Josette Carter

Josette Carter

Josette Carter, who left this world peacefully at the age of 80, on Sunday, March 2, 2025, after a courageous battle with Parkinson’s disease, will be deeply missed by all who knew her. Josette was born in Wavre, Belgium on May 28, 1944, during World War II. After the war ended, she immigrated to the United States with her mother and brother to seek a new life. Josette grew up in Riverdale, Illinois and attended Thornridge High School.

As a teenager, Josette met the love of her life, Errol “Whitey” Carter, and the two shared more than five decades of marriage filled with love and unwavering companionship. Her devotion to her family was the core of who she was—no role was more cherished than that of wife, mother, and grandmother.

Josette’s loving legacy continues through her only daughter, Susan (Michael) Papai; her cherished grandchildren, Joseph (Jordan) Papai and Christina Papai; and one great-granddaughter, Sophie Papai. She is also survived by a sister, Mary (the late Patrick) Lydon; along with many beloved nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her loving husband, Errol Carter; her mother, Jeanne (nee Vandenput) Ryder; and her brother, William (the late Mary Beth) Stancato.

While we mourn her passing, we celebrate the wonderful woman Josette was—a devoted wife, a proud mother, and a loving grandmother. She will always be remembered for her strength, her kindness, and the deep love she gave to her family.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Cremation rites have been accorded as per Josette's wishes.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in her name to Parkinson’s Foundation.
