Bernard Wittkofski

Obituary of Bernard Joseph Wittkofski

Bernard Joseph Wittkofski, age 82, of Morris, previously of Plainfield and Lockport, passed away peacefully on March 22, 2025, with his loving family by his side.  He was born October 24, 1942, in Lockport, IL the son of the late Bernard and Bernice (nee Herman). Bernie graduated from Taft Grade School in Lockport, IL, and Lockport Township High School Class of 1960. He retired from Will County Printing after many years of dedicated service.

He was a member of the Graphic Communications International Union, and Loyal Order of the Moose-Lockport Lodge 1557 since 1964. Bernie was a former board member of the Pure Rod and Gun Club, Plainfield, IL, former Troy Township Volunteer Firefighter, and former volunteer for the Will County EMA Snowmobile Rescue Squad, where he helped to rescue motorists stranded on Interstate 55 during the blizzard of 1979 and other inclement weather rescues.

Bernie was a strong and honorable man, effortlessly forming friendships wherever he went. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, who were his pride and joy. Bernie was a regular presence at his grandchildren’s sporting events and other activities. During the summer, you could find Bernie swimming in his pool with his daughters and grandchildren. Bernie was an avid fisherman, hunter, trapper, and outdoorsman. He found immense joy and tranquility while fishing at his home in Winneconne, Wisconsin, where the fish were always biting, even if they were just nibbling at his bait. Bernie loved sharing his catch with his family, friends, and the elders in the community, spreading joy with every fish he reeled in.  He enjoyed working on cars and small engines, and could build or fix anything.  He took great pride in teaching his grandsons these valuable skills. He was well known and liked in his community and could often be found enjoying a few beers on his deck with his neighborhood friends. There will be a void in the hearts of everyone who knew and loved him.

Bernie is survived by his devoted daughters, Jeanne Eddy and Joan (David) Featherson; grandchildren, Ryan Murray and Grayce, Ella, Luke and Jeremy Featherson; wonderful friends, Billy Murray and Ed and Becky Cockream; siblings, Raymond Wittkofski (the late Marilyn), Robert (Shirley) Wittkofski, Judy (Donald) Baudino, Richard (Kathy) Wittkofski, Thomas Wittkofski and Betty (Alan) Wrather; sister-in-law, Patricia Moonier; and several cousins, nieces, nephews, and many dear friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 45 years, Margaret “Sissy” (nee Kane) Wittkofski (2012).

Bernie’s family extends their heartfelt gratitude to his wonderful siblings, friends, and neighbors for their support and kindness as he aged.

As it was his request, cremation rights have been accorded and there will be no services at this time.
