Shirley Daniel

Obituary of Shirley Mae Daniel

Shirley Mae Daniel (nee Maske), age 90, passed away peacefully on May 28, 2025, at Sunny Hill Nursing Home with family at her bedside. Shirley was born on September 14, 1934, at Silver Cross Hospital to the late Louis and Augustine (nee Jaumotte) Maske.

A lifelong area resident, Shirley attended Haven School in New Lenox, St. Peters Lutheran Grade School in Joliet, and graduated with the class of 1952 from Joliet Township High School. She was employed in her younger years at the United States Rubber Company at the Joliet Arsenal. Shirley then worked at Rogers Cartage Company, where she covered office and dispatch duties, eventually retiring after 23 years of service.

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Clarence “Ed” Daniel in 1988; her siblings, Harold (Bernice) Maske, Laverle (nee Maske) Mackey, and Lewis (Carol) Maske; her nephews, Tim Mackey and Rob Mackey; and her great nephews, Charles “George” Whitaker and Christopher Schaal.

Shirley is survived by her loving sister, Esther (nee Maske) Mackey; her beloved nieces and nephews, Ruth (David) Silverman, Teena Mackey, Patrick (Christine) Mackey, Pam (nee Maske) Wyant, Timarie Maske, Sharon (Charles) Whitaker, and Sandra (Norman) Schaal; as well as many treasured great-nieces and nephews, cousins, and dear friends.

The role that Shirley found to be the most rewarding was providing childcare for many children that became her “kids”, including Becca (Dan) Shaw, Meredith (fiancé, Joey Pharo), Ashley (Jake) Calgaro, Laura (Zach) Kritz, Jeffery Cole, and Nikie and Kody Brand. Over the years, she became known as “Aunt Shirley” to all.

Shirley had an undeniable love for dogs and could arguably be considered one of the best dog-sitters around. Your canines would be in good hands under Shirley’s watch. She thoroughly enjoyed her post-retirement job at All Fur Dogs in Joliet.

Shirley was a Jackhammer’s season ticket holder; as well as an avid White Sox, Blackhawks, and Bears fan.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Aunt Shirley’s name to Sunny Hill Nursing Home or the Will County Humane Society.
