Obituary of Doyle Rigby
Doyle “Marie” Rigby, passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 12, 2025, at Lightways Hospice at the age of 86. Marie was born in Coleman, Texas, on March 11, 1939, where she was a graduate of Brownville High School. Throughout her life, she embodied warmth, kindness, and an unwavering generosity that touched the lives of many.
Marie made a name for herself in local history as the first female bartender in Joliet, proudly paving the way for others at the Howard Johnsons Hotel. Her professional journey included managing Margaritaville in Joliet, where her leadership and charm made a lasting impact. A woman of many talents, Marie was an accomplished cook and baker, owning and operating her own bakery. She was especially known for her exquisite wedding and special occasion cakes, lovingly crafted for countless family members and friends. Her culinary gifts were matched only by her skill as a seamstress, creating both practical and beautiful garments that her children wore proudly.
Marie’s generosity extended far beyond her family; she was a surrogate mother to many of her children's friends. Her home was a place of welcome—where doors were never locked and a warm meal, heartfelt advice, and a comforting presence were always available. This spirit of kindness made her a grounding presence in her community and a beloved figure among those who had the privilege of knowing her.
Marie is survived by her loving daughter, Johnita (Sean) Case; her dear grandchildren, Chris Andrae and Colleen Andrae; daughter-in-law, Cathy Andrae; her second husband, Gerald Whalen; stepsons, Timothy (Deanna) and Brian (Diane) Whalen; and her cherished feline companion, "George." She also held close and meaningful friendships with her neighbors, Terry Adams and Beth Kuster, whose presence enriched her daily life.
She is preceded in death by her beloved children, Francine and Jimmie Andrae; parents, Van and Leoma Taylor; brother, Jimmie Rowden; sister, Vanessa Taylor-Reader; aunt, Estelle Rowden; and her grandparents, E.S. and Ida Rowden; and her treasured cat, "Henrietta."
Per Marie’s wishes, services will be held privately.
