Obituary of Dorothy Fischer
Dorothy Fischer, of Joliet, passed away peacefully on Friday, October 17, 2025, at the age of 91.
Born September 13, 1934, in Chicago, she was the daughter of Sandrina and Anselmo Cassettari, and was a graduate of St. Patrick’s High School in Chicago.
She met her husband, John Fischer, while working for Bradner Smith and Company, and they married in 1957, at Notre Dame Church in Chicago. They enjoyed 63 years of marriage until his passing November 30, 2020. Her parents also preceded her in death.
Due to John’s job, they moved to Joliet, where she was a stay-at-home mother until her children were older. She then worked full-time in the Business Office at Joliet Public Schools until she retired at age 65. She enjoyed working and continued to work part-time at John F. Kennedy Administration Building until she was 75.
Dorothy is survived by her daughter, Judy (Tom) Cole of Joliet, and her son, Bill (Rachel) Fischer of Oak Lawn; her grandchildren, Laura (Zach) Kriz, Jeffrey Cole, Sarah (Grant) Slowik, and Michael Fischer; and her great-grandchildren, Lily Kriz, Kenzie Kriz, Olivia Slowik, and Westley Slowik.
Dorothy and John spent many years traveling the world on church tours. They were devout Catholics and were parishioners at St. Patrick Church in their early years, and then became parishioners at the Church of St. Jude in their later years
Dorothy was the heart of their family and a great Italian cook. She hosted every holiday at her house until she was 82 years old, and continued to help out at family celebrations as the leader and center of our family. Her strength and kindness will be dearly missed.
A Mass of Christian Burial for Dorothy Fischer will be celebrated Thursday, October 23, 2025, at 10:00 a.m., at Queen of Apostles Catholic Church, 18 Woodlawn Avenue, Joliet. Entombment will follow in Queen of Heaven Mausoleum, Hillside. Visitation will be private.
In lieu of flowers, memorials in her name in the form of Masses at Queen of Apostles Catholic Church would be appreciated.
