It has been nearly two weeks since you left us, old friend. Not going to lie, this one is very difficult to accept. I still have not really processed that you are gone. I could only bring myself to write when I knew your service in Lawton would be held. Though decades and many miles separated us, our high school years at Lawton-Bronson were never far from my mind and never left my heart. It grieves me to think that I cannot recall precisely when we last saw each other. Thank God we at least could keep virtual contact up on Facebook. I’ll always remember your green Chevelle, the swimming pond, all the high school sports, high school choir, swing choir, the school play…. Funny how three short years, that began over forty ago now, remain some of my most vivid and fondest memories. It took me some time but I finally get your appreciation of Prince and his music. Back then I thought it was good. Now I see its genius, which you did from the start. In fact as I wrote this, Purple Rain and Free played on my playlist. Not a coincidence. I shall miss you always, and forever regret we never saw one another again in person in this life since shortly after high school graduation. What’s that line from True Grit? “Time just gets away from us.” Indeed.
Patty, Mallory, Riley, Taylor, DeRoy, Sharon, and Robin, I am so deeply sorry for your loss. Thank you for bringing Kevin to us, and for sharing him with the world. I will never forget him, and I mourn his passing with you all. I look forward to the day when we shall all meet again, across Jordan, and rest our horses in the shade of the trees by the river. God comfort you all in this time. Requiescat in pace.

On behalf of the entire Joliet American Legion Band, I extend my heartfelt condolences to Patty and daughters on the loss of a dear husband and father. I personally came to know Kevin in his role on the "Kevin Kollins Show" at WJOL. Kevin would often graciously host members of the band to help further promote the major events on the band's schedule. Being the talented interviewer that he was, he always made sure that the band's message was accurately and thoroughly conveyed to the listening audience. Kevin was a true credit to his profession and obviously served his community well in various ways. May he rest in peace!

Kevin was a beautiful and wonderful human who made it evident that his wife and 3 beautiful daughters were his world! Although this was an extreme tragedy, I hope his family can find comfort in knowing they have a true guardian angel watching over them for eternity. Patty, I’m so terribly sorry. Kevin was always a bright light in my life. At one point in HS band he was right behind me on snare drum and his quick wit and sarcasm kept me laughing through the whole practice. Later on, I got lucky enough to be friends with y’all on Facebook and see your beautiful family grow. I gained such a greater appreciation for Kevin being able to see his values in action both with the police force and other topics that we talked about on sm. I’m keeping you and your family close to my heart. He will be so missed.

I will never forget the fun we had playing cards, chasing after Prince and just being great friends when we lived in MN. Kevin lived with us for a bit before Patty got there, and it took me awhile to like him. He had that way of winning you over! I do know that he was a great husband to Patty and a great father to his girls! He was a really good guy!
