John worked for my dad at Illinois Bell. I started there in 1969. Shortly after I started I got drafted and went to Vietnam. While I was gone my dad retired and at his retirement party John presented him with a plaque for 46 years of service. When I got back is when I first met John. He shook my hand and thanked me for my service.
I was a lineman and John was a splicing Forman at the Theodore Street garage. I became a splicer and worked for John several times, especially on outages. When you worked long hours on an outage for John, he always made sure you got fed. When the Phone Company had a major outage John was the guy to get things set up for quick restoration of service. I have a lot of respect for John and will miss him but always remember him. God has a special man with him that can fix anything. My condolences to the family for his loss. God Bless John.

John was a hero to me. In Fall 1967, my two year old son wandered into the cornfield in back of my house. I couldn’t find him! I called the emergency line and members of the fire and police department came to help search, John joined the group, and they fanned out through the dense cornfield looking and calling for him. It was John who found him huddled down in the thick autumn corn. I will never forget that. John was my hero too! Lola Hill
