Obituary of Michael A. Gurnitz

Michael Andrew Gurnitz, age 71, of Plainfield, passed away peacefully, Sunday, January 18, 2026, at home, surrounded by his loving wife and daughter.

Born March 26, 1954, in Joliet, he was the son of Joseph and Rose (Carey) Gurnitz, and was a graduate of Plainfield Central High School with the Class of 1972.

Michael was a proud member of IBEW Local #176, working as an electrician for 37 years until his retirement in 2011.  He was also a member of the Joliet Moose Lodge #300 since 1982.

From an early age, Michael had a love for fishing, motorcycles, and old cars. In retirement, he found great enjoyment in yard work and gardening. Time spent in his garage watching movies and listening to music was considered time well spent. 

Surviving are his beloved wife of 52 years, June C. (Hafey) Gurnitz of Plainfield; his loving daughter, Kristen (Matthew) Bernier of Charlotte, NC; and one granddaughter, Krystal Paramo.

He will also be missed by Lulu, his beloved canine friend and protector.

Michael was preceded in death by his parents, and one brother, Arthur (Carol) Gurnitz.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff of Lightways Hospice for their loving care, especially Holly, Maggie, and Beth.  

A Celebration of Life for Michael Gurnitz will be held Saturday, February 21, 2026, at 12:15 p.m., at Maurie's Table, 2360 Glenwood Avenue, Joliet, IL 60435.  Jeans and your favorite T-shirt are the perfect attire.  Mike would not have wanted anyone dressing up.

Cremation rites have been accorded and interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in his name to Lightways Hospice (www.lightways.org) would be appreciated.
