Obituary of Verda Johnson-Trotter
Verda Johnson-Trotter, age 67, passed away on Saturday, February 28, 2026, at St. Joseph Hospital. She was born on January 22, 1959, in Chicago, IL, to the late Maurice and Mary Ella (Brown) Stegall.
Verda lived life with boldness and personality. She cared for others with her whole being and stood fiercely for the people she loved. Known for bringing laughter and energy into any gathering, she was spirited, outspoken, and unapologetically herself. Her strong voice and vibrant presence were part of what made her unforgettable. She enjoyed life, cherished her family, and loved in her own powerful way.
Verda is survived by her loving son, DeShawn (Christal) Johnson; her cherished grandchildren, Andrew, Alexis (Ethan), Jervias, Jamal, and Christion. As a proud great-grandmother, she was affectionately known as “GiGi” to her only great-grandchild, Alexander. She is also survived by her siblings, Lila Anderson, Martin Johnson, and Antoinette Johnson; many extended family, and dear friends, who will miss her deeply.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Mary Brown and Maurice Stegall; her beloved husband, Harry N. Trotter; her sister, Ann Johnson; and her two brothers, Orrie Brown and Daniel Johnson.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, March 14, 2026 at 12:00 p.m. at the Second Baptist Church, 163 W. 150th St., Harvey, IL. Due to her request, cremation rites have been accorded. Private family inurnment will be at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery.
