Obituary of Jon Povalish
Jon “Jay” Povalish, age 65, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 15, 2026, at St. Joseph Medical Center.
Jay was born on May 17, 1960, in Lemont, Illinois, to Elizabeth “Betty” and John Povalish. He was raised there, beginning a story full of laughter, resilience, and good times.
Jay is survived by his incredible wife of 32 years, Gail, and his children, Jayson (Mandy) Povalish, Jeremy (Liz) Groner, and Brittany (Justin) Pillion.
If you asked Jay about his greatest accomplishment, he would have quickly told you it was being “Papa.” His six grandchildren, Jayden, Ava, Jonah, Ella, Owen, and Jackson were his pride and joy. They were the reason behind his biggest smiles, and the people he loved most in the world.
Jay is also survived by his three siblings, along with many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends who were lucky enough to know him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Betty and John Povalish.
Despite many health challenges throughout the years, Jay faced them with stubborn determination and faith. Jay lived life fully. He loved fishing, golfing, telling stories, and cracking jokes. Whether you knew him for five minutes or fifty years, you likely walked away with a story, a laugh, or at least one of his legendary and sometimes questionable jokes.
A celebration of Jay’s life will be held at later date. As it was his request, cremation rites have been accorded. Arrangements have been entrusted to Fred C. Dames Funeral Home, Joliet.
Until then, those who knew and loved Jay are encouraged to honor him the way he lived: tell a good story, share a laugh, spend the day fishing or on the golf course—and most importantly, remind the people you love just how much they mean to you. Because as Jay’s family always said, and as he always knew… “Love you much.”
In lieu of flowers, memorial’s in his name to be made to the National Kidney Foundation
