Obituary of Andrew Vollmer

Andrew G. Vollmer Age 93, a lifelong resident of Joliet, passed away Saturday, January 24, 2015 at the home of his son, with his family at his side. Born May 18, 1921 in Joliet, he was the son of Joseph Michael and Emilie (nee Zeman) Vollmer. He was a decorated United States Marine Corp veteran of World War II, whose service included the Battle of Iwo Jima. Andy retired from Caterpillar, Inc. where he worked over 20 years as a machinist, and was a proud member and past president of Local #851, Machinists and Aerospace Workers Union. He was a life member of the U. S. Marine Corps League and a founding member of its Joliet Detachment. He was also a life member of Cantigny Post #367, V.F.W. A lifelong member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, he was an active volunteer with the church food pantry. Andy was also a lifelong Cub fan and an avid fisherman. Surviving are his five children, Leann (late David) Bianchi, Paul (Marilyn) Vollmer, and Michael (Debbie) Vollmer, all of Joliet, Bruce (Lou Ann) Vollmer of Columbia, MD, and Christopher (Connie) Vollmer of Shorewood; ten grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Preceded by his beloved wife, Leota (nee Rhodes) Vollmer (Jan. 17, 1991); his parents, one daughter, Theresa, in infancy, and his dear friend, Fr. Tom Shaughnessy, OFM. Memorial services for Andrew Vollmer will be held Thursday, January 29, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. at the Fred C. Dames Funeral Home, 3200 Black at Essington Rds., Joliet. Entombment of his urn will be in Woodlawn Mausoleum. Memorials in his name to Joliet Area Community Hospice or Wounded Warriors would be appreciated. Visitation Wednesday, 4-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
