Gena Meyers

Obituary of Gena Meyers

Gena Christine Meyers was born in Freeport, IL on July 13, 1949, the first child of Betty L. and Delmer R. Meyers. A brother, Kim, joined them 3 years later, as well as a sister, Julie, 12 years later. The family moved to Davis, IL when Gena was six, and lived there for many years. Gena attended Davis Grade School, then Dakota High School. She enjoyed many of the activities growing up that all small town kids enjoyed, especially basketball. Following high school she graduated from Augustana College in 1971. After receiving her Bachelor's degree, she taught students in Freeport, IL, sold ads for a radio station, sold seed corn for a local company, and owned her own limo service, Lady Limo. Gena later got her Master's degree in guidance and counseling from Western IL University. Plainfield School district hired her as a guidance counselor, and she later became Dean of Students. She retired from that position. Gena loved her dogs and her cars. Da Bears, the Cubs, and the Bulls were her favorite teams. She lived in Shorewood and enjoyed summers at Woodsmoke Ranch in Seneca. She was diagnosed with cancer in December 2014, and passed away on April 28, 2015 at her home. She was preceded in death by both parents; and great-nephew, Maddix Meyers and great-niece, Alexis Meyers. She leaves behind her brother, Kim R. (Pam) Meyers of Prophetstown, IL; sister, Julie (Christopher) Lawrence of Crystal Lake, IL; nephew, Phillip (Ashley) Meyers of DeKalb, IL; great-nephew, Jaxon Meyers; niece, Emily (Jonathon) Hazlett of Prophetstown; partner, Lori Coughlin of Shorewood; and many friends.
