Obituary of Norval Galloway

NORVAL B. GALLOWAY, JR. Norval B. Galloway, Jr. was born January 27, 1921 in Streator, Illinois. He died peacefully on April 29, 2015 at the age of 94 in Morris, Illinois. Norval was preceded in death by his parents, Norval B. and Theresa (Kuhn) Galloway of Streator, and a younger brother Samuel, also of Streator. Initially, the family lived in Streator. However, the family acquired a farm east of town and Norval grew up on the farm. Norval married Jacquelin Mills, also from Streator, in 1948, who survives him. Norval and Jackie moved their family to Morris, Illinois in 1954 where they continued to live until his death. Together, they raised their children; Julie (Neil) Ott, Norval (Patricia Pietrzak) Galloway III, Davye Ann Neally, Gary Michael (Sandy) Galloway, John Galloway and Laura Flick, all of whom survive him. Norval is also survived by 14 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Norval was drafted into the Army and served honorably during World War II before being discharged in 1944. He enrolled at Northern Illinois University, earning a degree in education in 1949. Norval earned a Masters degree from NIU in 1962. Following college, Norval began a career in education. He was appointed Superintendent of Schools for District 17 in Channahon, Illinois in 1954. Norval served as Superintendent in Channahon until retiring in 1983. Norval looked after the family farm in Streator throughout his life. He maintained many close relationships with friends, relatives and farmers from the area. Norval served in the Army for just a few years but he developed many friendships during his service and maintained them throughout his life. Norval was a fixture at army reunions for decades. Norval was a longtime member of the Immaculate Conception Church in Morris and service organizations including the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion. He talked about his experiences at local Memorial Day and Veteran's Day events. He served as a member of an honorary color guard at veterans' burials. As Superintendent in Channahon, Norval cultivated a family relationship among the school's faculty, staff and students. Norval and the Channahon School community were a great match culminating in the construction and dedication of the Norval B. Galloway, Jr. Grade School in 1976. Norval maintained a fondness for sports throughout his life. He served as manager for football, basketball and baseball teams at Northern Illinois University. He was a lifelong supporter of NIU athletics. Norval coached basketball during his early years in Channahon. Last but not least, Norval was a lifelong fan of the Chicago Cubs through their good times and bad. Norval had many lifelong relationships, friendships and interests. He was a good man, he touched many lives and he will be missed. Norval's family would like to recognize the exceptional care given to Norval by Ms. Marijona Corrigan during the last year of his life. Family and friends are invited to gather on Saturday, May 2, 2015 at Immaculate Conception Church, 516 E. Jackson St., Morris, IL from 9:00 am until the time of Mass of Christian Burial 11:00 am. As it was his wish, cremation rites will be accorded following mass. Inurnment will be held privately at Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Morris, IL. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his name to Wounded Warriors, Alzheimer's Foundation or the charity of the donor's choice. For further information, 815-942-5040.
