Obituary of Virginia Garvey

Virginia R. Garvey Age 93, of Joliet, passed away peacefully, Saturday, May 14, 2016 at Presence St. Joseph Medical Center. Born July 1, 1922 in Streator, she was the daughter of John and Mary (Harlacher) Neighbor. She graduated from St. Joseph School of Nursing in 1943 and retired as a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist from Associated Anesthesiologists of Joliet in 1990. Virginia was an active member of St. Patrick Catholic Church serving as a greeter, money counter and extra ordinary minister to the homebound of the parish. She was also a member of the Council of Catholic Women, Club 55, and the original Mothers Club of the parish. She enjoyed volunteering for Joliet Area Community Hospice, Will Grundy Medical Clinic, St. Joseph Medical Center Pastoral Care Department and St. Joseph Medical Center Auxillary. Virginia was a member of the Catholic Womens League of Joliet, Ladies of the Elks Auxillary, Joliet Hospitality Club, Women of the Moose, and Joliet Area Community Hospice. In 2003, she received the Joliet Diocese Woman of the Year for St. Patrick's Parish, the Silver Eagle award from Joliet Rotary Club, and the Joliet Area Community Hospice Health and Community Service Award from the United Way of Will County. In her free time she enjoyed playing golf and bridge. She will be remembered as one who loved and served her fellowman as well as her family. Surviving are her devoted son, John (Anne) Garvey of Lockport; twin grandchildren, Suzanne Marie (Zachery) Dieter of Joliet, and John Thomas (Athena) Garvey, Jr. of Lockport; one great-granddaughter, Riley Dieter; and many nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by her beloved husband, Joseph J. Garvey (February 13, 1997); her parents; three brothers, Paul (Annie) Neighbor, William (Leona) Neighbor, and Leonard (Geraldine) Neighbor; and one sister, Josephine (Ralph) Carmean. Funeral services for Virginia Garvey will be held Friday, May 20, 2016 at 9:15 a.m. from the Fred C. Dames Funeral Home, 3200 Black at Essington Rds., Joliet to St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church for Mass at 10:00 a.m. Interment will be in Resurrection Cemetery. Memorials in her name to Joliet Area Community Hospice would be appreciated. Visitation will be held Thursday, from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. For information (815) 741-5500.
