“Papou”

Nicholas James Petropolis, “Papou”, age 92, of Joliet, passed away peacefully on Friday, January 19, 2018, at the Illinois Veteran’s Home at LaSalle.  Nicholas was born on November, 30, 1925, in Sarasota, FL, to the union of Paul and Margaret (nee Meltinos) Petropolis.  He was a graduate of Joliet Township High School and earned his Bachelor’s Degree from Sam M. Walton College of Business in Chicago, IL.  Nicholas proudly served our country in the United States Army during World War II.   He was a dedicated to his career as an Industrial Engineer at General Motors.  Life was full for Nicholas, as a child he was the Soapbox Derby Champion of Illinois with a car he built himself.  He was an avid golfer and car enthusiast.  Nicholas was a member of Cantigny Post 367 VFW, American Legion, Harwood Post 5, Irving Athletic Club, Joliet Rivals Club, Moran Athletic Club, and St. Joe’s Senior Club.  Nicholas was happiest when spending time with his family on annual trips to St. Louis and also watching his grandson, Nic, play football and baseball.  To be able see his beloved Cubs win the World Series brought tears of joy to his eyes!

Nicholas is survived by and will be dearly missed by his daughter, Lisa Petropolis; his sisters, Mary (Gerald) Sampson and Sophie (Gregory) Toulon; grandchildren, Alexandra, Demitra, and Nicholas; his sisters-in-law, Lorraine (James) Devine, Juline Petropolis, and Donna Keigher; and brother-in-law, Thomas (Ellen) Keigher.

He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Dolores (nee Keigher); his parents; his brother, William Petropolis; his sister, Josephine (Thomas) Gianes; his brothers-in-law, George Keigher, and Gerald (Jackie) Keigher; and his sister-in-law, Sharon Paris.

Funeral Services for Nicholas James Petropolis were held privately at All Saints Greek Orthodox Church with entombment at Woodlawn Memorial Park.  Memorials in his name to All Saints Greek Orthodox Church, 102 N.
