Dr. Samuel Klein
October 1, 1918 - January 4, 2009
Age 90. Lifelong resident of Joliet. Respected practitioner of Internal Medicine for over 50 years in Joliet, and for several years after his retirement, a volunteer at the Will-Grundy Medical Free Clinic. Dr. Klein served as Chief of Staff at both St. Joseph and Silver Cross Hospitals in Joliet. He graduated from Joliet Township High School Class of 1936, Joliet Junior College Class of 1938 and the University of Illinois Medical School Class of 1942. He served his internship and residency in Internal Medicine at Milwaukee County Hospital in Milwaukee, WI, completing his residency after his tour of duty with the U.S. Army. In WWII, he served his country in the Army Medical Corps in the European Theater, rising to the rank of Captain. Dr. Klein was a battlefield surgeon, who landed on Omaha Beach, Normandy on D-day plus five. He was awarded a Bronze Star and Purple Heart for his military service.
He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Billie (Farmer).
Preceded in death by his wife of 25 years, Leah (Moltz) Klein; his parents, Celia and Max Klein of Joliet; and sister, Ruth (Johnny) Logan of Joliet.
He is survived by sons, Dr. Frederick (Sharon) Klein of Tucson, AZ, Jeffrey (Renee) Specht of Wilmington, and daughter, Susan (Allen Bagdade) Klein of Chicago; five grandchildren, Lawrence (Jamie) Klein of Atlanta, GA, Daniel Klein of Tucson, AZ, Adam (Amy) Specht of Villa Park, IL, April (Gordan) Redzic of Chicago and Jori (Matthew) Jacobs of New York, NY; great-granddaughters, Katelyn and Sabrina Klein of Atlanta, GA; two sisters, Marion (late Jim) Gist of Ruston, LA and Irene (Eddie) Onofrey of Joliet.
Private funeral services for Dr. Klein will be held with interment at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery. Donations can be made in Dr. Klein's loving memory to the Will-Grundy Medical Free Clinic or the Joliet Area Historical Society Museum. Arrangements by:
