Melvin J. Larson
Age 95. At rest Monday, March 1, 2010 at his late residence, under the care of Joliet Area Community Hospice. Born and raised in Northwestern Minnesota on May 28, 1914, he was a resident of Joliet for over 50 years. Former Chairman of Physical Sciences at Joliet Junior College for 25 years. Founder of the United Cerebral Palsy of Praireland, where the local labor unions were instrumental in the renovation of Reedswood School purchased from District #86 for the students of the United Cerebral Palsy. Board member of the Joliet Family Counseling Agency. Member of the Joliet Lions Club, Elks Club, currently Rotary of Joliet, American Association of University Professors and Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association. Mel received his Masters degree from the University of Minnesota and received his second Masters degree in higher education from the University of Chicago.
Surviving are his loving wife of 64 years, Gloria (nee Mazzini) Larson of Joliet; two sons, Peter (Mary) Larson of Palatine, IL and Marty Larson of Las Vegas, NV; four grandchildren; two brothers, Elmer (Marion) and Joe Larson; and several nieces and nephews.
At Mel's request, his remains have been donated to the Anatomical Gift Association of Illinois for the advancement of medical study. A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, March 11, 2010 at 4:00 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 805 Western Avenue, Joliet. Rev. Dr. Craig M. Herr officiating, Rev. Dale Hammond assisting. Memorials to First Presbyterian Church or United Cerebral Palsy of Prairieland would be appreciated. Family will receive friends and relatives on Thursday at the church from 3:30 p.m. until time of services. Arrangements by:
