Obituary of Evelyn Benedict
Evelyn M. Benedict
nee De Pray
Age 91, passed away peacefully, Wednesday, May 2, 2007 in San Antonio, TX. Born May 20, 1915 in Joliet to the late Louis F. and Mary (nee Zettinger) De Pray. A graduate of Joliet Township High School, Class of 1933. She married Richard "Ken" Benedict on September 29, 1940 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Joliet. Evelyn, her late husband, and son Richard L. Benedict , owned and operated Joliet Paint and Wall Covering until they retired in November 2002. Customer service was always paramount at their Republic Street store where Evelyn was always happy to offer advice in decorating and color matching. She knew, and without hesitation, could locate every wallpaper sample in the Stores' library of 500 "swatch" catalogues. Professionally, she was most proud of being a connoisseur of Patricia Nimocks "Decoupage". Personally, her loving family and friends were a great source of pride.
Evelyn was the loving mother of Richard L. (LaVonne) Benedict of Daphne, AL and Mary Lou (Larry) Wulf of Bulverde, TX; beloved grandmother of Kim (Lennart) Martinson, Richard L. Benedict Jr., Rochelle Geoffry, Laura (Scott) McWhorter and Mark W. (Jennifer) Wulf; kind and loving "Matriarch" of eight great-grandchildren, Nichole Keys, Lena Martinson, Gabriel, Avangelina, Nathaniel and Quinton McWhorter, Shayla and Corin Wulf; fond aunt of the late Raymond (late Lois) Colbert, Robert (Jeanne) Colbert, Richard (Margaret) Colbert, Ronald (Dorothy) Colbert, Joanne (late Jim) Misewicz, Mary Patricia (Roger) Brown, Carol (Dr. John "Jack") Markley and the late William Louis Planing. Several cousins, great-nieces and great-nephews also survive.
In addition to her husband and parents, she is also preceded in death by one brother, Louis Francis (late Gladys) De Pray Jr.; three sisters, Luella (late Harry) Colbert, Marie (late William) Planing and Caroline De Pray in infancy, as well as two nephews.
Evelyn was a member of the Cathedral of St. Raymond, Council of Catholic Women and a former volunteer for Trinity Services and at St. Patrick's Retirement Home when it was located in downtown Joliet. In San Antonio, where she resided the past several years with her daughter and son-in-law, she was active in the senior groups of St. Padre Pio Catholic Church, enjoying new friendships and socializing, sharing her wit and sense of humor. A favorite hobby of Evelyn's was updating her photo albums; she also thoroughly enjoyed the time she and her husband spent traveling in later years..
