Sister Sophie Petro, OSF Sr. Sophie (M. Firmina) Petro, OSF (1919-2008) died peacefully at Our Lady of Angels Retirement Home on October 4th, after a long illness. She was the beloved daughter of the deceased John and Elizabeth (Harcarich), cherished sister of the Andrew (Doretta), Mary (Art) Ottenbach, George, Elizabeth (Robert) Norris, and John. All of her siblings preceded her in death. She was the fond aunt of Patricia (deceased Victor) Hammer, George Rackett, the deceased Robert (Judy) Norris, Sandra (Terry) McGuire, Kay (Phil) Emm, and many grand and great nieces and nephews. Sr. Sophie was a treasured member of the Sisters of St. Francis of Mary Immaculate (Joliet) for 70 years of her life. Born and raised in Streator, Illinois, Sr. Sophie was proud of her Slovak cultural heritage and immigrant roots. She attended St.StephenSchool as well as St.FrancisAcademy, the College of St. Francis, LewisCollege and the Seraphic Institute. Sr. Sophie was particularly fond of teaching children in the primary grades and spent most of her years in ministry as an elementary school teacher in Illinois and Ohio. In retirement, she spent time at St. Clare House of Prayer in Kankakee. Upon her return to Joliet, she continued her ministry of teaching as a tutor at the St. Francis Reading Center. Her final years were devoted to prayer at Our Lady of Angels Retirement Home. The wake will be at Our Lady of Angels Retirement Home, 1201 Wyoming Avenue, Joliet, IL (Wyoming and Rt. 30) on Wednesday, October 8, 2008, from 2:00-6:45 p.m., with a Prayer Service at 4:45 p.m. and Mass of Christian Burial at 7:00 p.m. The Funeral Procession will leave from Our Lady of Angels on Thursday morning, October 9, 2008, at 9:00 a.m. The Interment will take place at St. Stephen Roman Catholic Cemetery in Streator, Illinois.
