William E. Powers
"Bill"
Age 85, of Joliet, passed away peacefully, Tuesday April 29, 2008 at Provena St. Joseph Medical Center. Born June 14, 1922 in Chicago to the late Edward and Martha (Beidle) Powers, he had resided in Joliet most of his adult life.
Survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, Lillian (nee Kut); Loving father of Jeffrey (Patricia) Powers of Plymouth, WI, Lisa Powers of Chicago and Gary (Marnie) Powers of Shorewood. Proud grandfather of Sarah and Niccole Powers; Alise Jonville; Morgan and Abby Powers. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
Preceded in death by his parents as well as his siblings, Robert Powers, Darlene Brundage and Donald Powers.
Bill was a United States Army Veteran who served during WWII in the European Theatre and he was a member of VFW Cantigny Post #367. Following the war, Bill received his bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering in 1948 from the University of Illinois, Champaign. Bill was honored for academic excellence with a membership in the electrical engineering honors society Eta Kappa Nu. After college, he took a job with Commonwealth Edison where he retired after 40 years of service. Bill was also a member of the Cathedral of St. Raymond Nonnatus where he was a Boy Scout leader, a lector and in his later years he volunteered with flower gardening. He enjoyed traveling, camping at CECO club and was an avid golfer. Bill recorded a hole in one at Woodruff Golf Course at the 14th hole, on June 14th, 1961, his birthday. Another proud moment for Bill occurred when his oldest son Jeff's baseball team, which he managed, won the Championship for St. Joes Park Junior League Baseball on June 1,1965. Bill always emphasized the importance of education and was extremely proud of all three of his children graduating from college.
Funeral services for William E. Powers will be Monday, May 5, 2008, 9:15 a.m. from the funeral home to the Cathedral of St. Raymond Nonnatus where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Interment Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials in his name to the Cathedral of St. Raymond or the American Stroke Association would be appreciated. Visitation Sunday from 2-6 p.m. at:
