Obituary of John Schmit
John W. Schmit
Age 66, of Morris the past 11 years, and formerly of Chicago, passed away Tuesday, September 29, 2009 at the Joliet Area Community Hospice Home with his beloved wife by his side. Born December 4, 1942 in Chicago to John W. and Dixie Lorene (nee Dugan) Schmit, Sr., he served with the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Dixie and Yellowstone. He was also a graduate of Southern Illinois University. He retired as a Lieutenant from the Chicago Fire Department in 1998 after 32 years of service. John was also an avid member of the Joliet Muzzle Loaders Association.
Surviving are his wife of 37 years, Margaret M. (nee Lacey) Schmit of Morris; one sister, Barbara (Raymond) Brannigan-Hutson of Shorewood; one brother-in-law, Emerson W. (Martha L.) Lacey of Glen Ellyn; his nephews and nieces, Dan (Tracey Walter) Brannigan, GySgt Martin Brannigan, Kevin (Monja West) Brannigan, Emerson S. (Andrea) Lacey, Anne (Stephen) Cripe, and William (Wynne) Lacey; several great-nieces and nephews, one great-great-nephew, and numerous cousins.
He was preceded by his parents, and one niece, Mary Margaret Brannigan.
Funeral services for John W. Schmit will be Friday, October 2, 2009 at 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home chapel. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Joliet Oncology-Hematology Associates Foundation or Joliet Area Community Hospice would be appreciated. Visitation Friday, from 4-8 p.m. at:
