Sydney Scholar
Age 86. Passed away June 27, 2009 with his family by his side after lingering Parkinson's Disease. Loving husband for 63 years of Beatrice (Saper).
Born November 14, 1922 in Chicago, IL, moved to Kenosha, Wisconsin as a child. Attended University of Wisconsin where he met his future wife. Graduated from Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University. Worked as the Sports Editor of the Clinton Herald in Clinton, Iowa. Bea and Syd were married in 1946. They returned to Joliet six months later where Syd joined the family business, Supreme Radiator and Body Company. Syd ran Supreme for 53 years before he retired in 1999. His greatest joys were spending time with his family and winters in Arizona.
Syd volunteered his time by serving on the board of Silver Cross Hospital, served as trustee for the Union pension fund for the machinists and teamsters. Served two terms as president of Will County Auto Body Association. In 1984, Syd was honored as "man of the year" by the Illinois Service Council. Syd was the longest living member of the Joliet noon Lion's Club. In 2002, Syd received the 55 year Monarch Award and the Foundation Fellow Award for his dedication in helping those in need. Just this week, he received an award for 61 years of dedicated service and perfect attendance from the Lion's Club. He was past president of B'nai Brith and Northern Illinois of Council of B'nai Brith and life time board member and past president of Joliet Jewish Welfare Chest.
In addition to his wife, Syd is survived by his two daughters, Bonnie Berlinsky of Northbrook, IL and Jacquie Bohanske of Scottsdale, Arizona, adoring and adored grandsons Joshua (Leanne) Berlinsky of Barrington, RI, Jeffrey (Treena) Berlinsky of Northbrook, IL, Michael Bohanske, senior at Boston University Medical School and Jason Bohanske, junior at University of Southern California, proud and loving Papa of Rian and Zachary Berlinsky.
Syd was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Sophie Scholar, brothers Norman (Claire) and Sam (Marge) Scholar. In addition to being a loving son, husband, father and grandfather, he was a devoted son-in-law and nephew to Nettie and Morris Saper and Anna and Morris Wiener.
The family wishes to thank Dr. J. Peneherrera, Linda and Kathy and staff of Joliet Area Hospice . A special thank you to his loving caretaker, Laura.
Funeral services for Sydney Scholar will be Tuesday, June 30, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at Joliet Jewish Congregation, 250 N. Midland Avenue at Campbell St., Joliet. Rabbi Charles Rubovits will officiate. Interment will be at 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, at Shalom Memorial Park, Arlington Heights. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Joliet Jewish Congregation or Joliet Area Community Hospice would be appreciated. Visitation TUESDAY, 10:00 a.m. until time of service at the Temple.
