George G. Smith
Passed away at the age of 84, on Thursday, March 19, 2009 at the Joliet Area Community Hospice Home, with his loving family by his side.
Survived by his devoted wife of 51 years, Jean (nee Richardson ); three children, Jeff (Jane) Smith, Bradley (Teresa) Smith, and Patricia (Frank) Fattore; beloved grandfather of Brittany Smith, Spencer Homan, Jared and Alex Fattore; also survived by his sister, Jane Duncan; brothers-in-law, Sam (Betty) Richardson, David (Jackie) Richardson, and John (Ronnie) Richardson; also leaving behind numerous nieces and nephews.
Preceded in death by his mother and father, Edith and Walter Smith; brother, Charles Smith; and nephew, Doug Richardson.
George was a board certified optician with doctors Paul and David Morimoto and Aras Zlioba. George was the owner of George G. Smith Hearing Aids, passionately serving the area for over 54 years. George served in the United States Air Force during WWII. Affiliations included, Free Masons, Shriners, Joliet Chamber of Commerce, American Heart Association, Illinois Hearing Aid Society, where he held several offices over the many years, and the Will County Old Timers Baseball Association. His interests included travel, golf, photography, and spending time with his grandchildren.
George volunteered his services to Doctors Without Borders in Oaxaca, Mexico, donating hearing aids and exams to indigent residents who could not afford these services. George was an amazing person who was kindhearted, loving, loyal, and touched many, many hearts during his time here. He was an inspiration to many and his passing will be a greatly mourned. George will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
Funeral Services for George G. Smith will be Wednesday, March 25, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. at the funeral home chapel, with Pastor Michael Hickok officiating. Interment Woodlawn Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorials in his name to Joliet Area Community Hospice would be greatly appreciated. Visitation Tuesday 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at:
