Obituary of Andrew Suffern

Andrew L. Suffern Age 91. Passed away Wednesday, June 2, 2010 at Rosewood Care Center. Born November 17, 1918 to the late Alex and Elsie (Koerber) Suffern, he was raised in Joliet, attending Sheridan and Farragut Grade Schools and graduating with the class of 1937 at Joliet Township High School. A U.S. Army Air Corp veteran who served during WWII. Corporal Suffern was a mechanic and crew chief on B-17's. His plane "Stinky" was graced with nose art of a skunk. On June 7, 1947 Andy married Susan Dranchak, and together, they enjoyed over 56 years of married life. Sue preceded Andy in death in 2004. Survived by his son Michael of Denver, Co.; two nephews, Richard and William Shega as well as many friends whom Andy and Sue always cherished. Preceded in death by his wife; parents and one brother, Edward Suffern. Andy retired from Caterpillar Inc. as a Supervisor after many years of service. He was a member of the American Legion for 60 years, Loyal Order of Moose, Lodge #300, Council Leader and Scoutmaster of the Rainbow Council of the Boy Scouts and long time Secretary and Past Exalted Ruler of Joliet Elks Lodge #296 (BPOE). Andy was also very active with Will County/Joliet Project Pride, which was founded by his wife and Rev. Jim Allen. Andy enjoyed people and life itself. A proud moment occurred last summer when he took one last ride in a B-17 out of Lewis University Airport. He remained independent and vital until earlier this year, dancing a Polka on his 90th birthday. maintaining his home and large yard, driving his Buick and fulfilling his lodge secretary duties at the Elks 4 days a week. Funeral Services for Andrew Suffern will be Thursday, June 10, 2010 at 11:30 am. at the funeral home. Interment at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery, Elwood. In lieu of flowers, memorials in his name to The Unitarian Universalist Church of Joliet, 3401 W. Jefferson St., Joliet, IL 60435 would be appreciated. Visitation Wednesday 3-8 p.m. at: FRED C.
