Obituary of MA Walters

Walters, MA, Arthur L. Journeyed peacefully from this world to the next on May 30, 2012. Born January 11, 1918, in Hibbing, MN. He was a decorated World War II veteran, serving in the European Theatre and North Africa with the 40th Combat Army Engineers group. He was a soldier among the first vehicles to enter the concentration camps near Munich deployed in the liberation and clean up detail. He graduated from the University of Minnesota and then studied abroad in Germany and at the Sorbonne (Paris), earning several degrees, including his Master's Degree in education with a concentration in foreign language. Mr. Walters, Professor Emeritus, taught German, French and English courses at Joliet Junior College from 1961 until his retirement in 1983. He was a world traveler with Ruby, his wife of 57 years (now deceased), and additionally enjoyed writing poetry to share with the Joliet Writers Club. Mr. Walters was a hospice volunteer, member of St. Raymond's Cathedral parish and its seniors' club, also the Paulites. He was also a member of the retired men's faculty breakfast club of JJC, and a life member of VFW Cantigny Post #367 and American Legion Harwood Post #5. Arthur, along with his wife, enjoyed traveling and together they visited over 65 countries. Preceded in death by Ruby, his loving wife of 57 years; son, Stephen; mother and father, Belva and Harvey Walters; brothers, Ray, John, Phillip, Norman, Rolland and Clifford; sister, Glee (Rivard, Patterson). Survived by daughter, Gretchen (Larry) Wells of St. Petersburg, FL; granddaughters, Lynette Cain of Chicago, Kelly (John) Marker of Inverness, FL; son, Joel (Jan) of Channahon; granddaughter, Jennifer (Kyle) and great-granddaughter, Kayla Gronseth of Lakeville, MN; grandson, Jeffrey (Sarah) of Chicago; granddaughter, Misty (Ray) Parker and family of Humboldt, TN; grandson, Russell (Frieda) of Lexington, KY; granddaughter, Krystal of Glendale, AZ; sister, Ruth Soular, of Hibbing, MN; sister-in-law, Evelyn Walters of Side Lake, MN. Walters, MA will be Monday, June 4, 2012 at 9:15 a.m. from the funeral home to the Cathedral of St. Raymond Nonnatus where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Interment Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery.
