Obituary of Joseph Limacher

Joseph John Limacher World War II Veteran Age 92. Deceased January 12, 2013. Joe Limacher died peacefully in Shands Hospital at the University of Florida, Gainesville, FL, following a brief illness after onset of dementia. Born December 18, 1920, in Joliet, he graduated Joliet Township High School in 1938, Joliet Junior College in 1941, Northwestern University Midshipman School in 1943, Loyola University in 1947, and Northern Illinois University in 1969. He received a bachelor's degree in Business Administration from Loyola, and a master's in Educational Administration from NIU. He served as a Navy lieutenant during World War II and in the Naval Reserve afterwards. He saw action in both Europe and the Pacific, including Anzio, Italy; Southern France, and Iwo Jima. His name and service recollections are memorialized online at: http://www.navylog.org. Following the war he married his fiancée Shirley Ann Smith, of Joliet, on August 4, 1945. He was a retired accountant (from Texaco), elementary school teacher and principal, and U.S. Postal Service employee. Joe was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Joliet, the Senior Citizens Association, and Cantigny Post 367 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Joe was preceded in death by his deeply missed and beloved wife of 56 years, Shirley A. Limacher, in 2001; by his parents, Celia E. (nee Wilhelmi) in 1953 and Frank J. Limacher in 1958, and a sister, Alma M. Limacher in 1987, all of Joliet; and another sister, Ruth C. Schaufler in 2009, of Leesburg, FL. He is survived by two sons, Richard J. (Beth) of Matteson, IL, and Michael J., of Bloomington, IL, and one daughter, Marian C. Limacher, M.D. (Timothy Flynn, M.D.) of Gainesville, FL. He was the loving grandfather of Mary Katherine and Brian Patrick Flynn. Funeral services for Joseph J. Limacher will be held Friday, January 18, 2013, 9:15 a.m. from the funeral home to St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery, Elwood, IL.
