delivered by Tom O'Shaughnessy at Truth Restaurant 24 Jan 13:
I would like to say a few words to remember "Grandma Diggy"
Diggy and Jean Lennon's cousin Norman Canty researched the Canty family history after he retired and he shared his research with his cousins:
- Binder: Art Canty
To explain his family research, Norman reminded his cousins: "Let's face it, some of our Grandchildren have no idea who we are."
After reviewing a suitcase full of Grandma Diggy's papers I received last summer, I understand what Norman was talking about. I found some history about Diggy to share with our family and friends.
- 1942 - cetificate: elected to National Honor Society at Calumet High School
- 1946 - hired as United Air Lines passenger agent at "Chicago Municipal Airport" (now known as Chicago Midway Airport)
- 1947 - United Air Lines Vice President, responding to a letter from the Sergeant at Arms of the United States Senate, wrote:
- Miss Canty has a very good record with our company.
- She is doing an exceptionally good job.
- 1948 - photo: Chicago Daily News
- 1949 - Diploma: United Air Lines Stewardess Training, Cheyenne
- interim personnel report: "Miss Canty completed three months service as a Mainliner Stewardess...during this period of time, her work has been well above average. Many favorable comments have already been received from passengers regarding her.
- 1965-1982 she learned the ropes in residential real estate with William R. Schomburg Inc REALTORS
- In her resume, she wrote: Assumed full responsibility for all aspects of the business from January to June 1981 during employer's illness
- 1984 - hired by U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics
- Accurately measured a statistical sample of prices for the Consumer Price Index
- The CPI is used to determine cost-of-living adjustments, for instance, so if you're a government employee or receive government benefits, think of Grandma Diggy next time you get a COLA increase!
- the government collects price data on a voluntary basis, so one of the biggest challenges was to persuade reluctant businesses to provide their data to the government.
- Diggy excelled at gaining their cooperation, as reflected in one of her performance reports: "Collects data from previously initiated businesses; including the more difficult and historically difficult outlets."
- Received at least eight awards in 15 years with the BLS
I would like us to remember our sister, Awee, our mother, our Grandma Diggy; our aunt and cousin Alice and our friend, who took pride in her family and friends, took pride in her work, and took pride in her country.
Thank you
