Betty L. Seil
(nee Gehrke)
Age 82, died peacefully on Saturday, November 23, 2013 surrounded by her loving family. Betty was a lifelong area resident, graduating from Joliet Township High School in 1949. She and her husband, Gordon, raised their children and lived and worked on their family farm in Plainfield Township until his retirement. Betty was employed by the Louis Joliet Bank and by the Heritage Bank in Crest Hill for many years. She later worked with Dow Realty and, during the years prior to her retirement, worked in her son's law office in New Lenox. She was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church and the Joliet Lioness Club and was awarded a life membership in the PTA for her work at Crystal Lawns School. She was a devoted, and forgiving, Chicago Cubs fan.
She is survived by her beloved husband of 64 years, Gordon H. ("Cy") Seil; her children, David (Karen) Seil, and Darla (David) Tilton; her grandchildren, Shawn, Justin and Kaitlin Seil and Mary Caroline Tilton; her sisters, Gail (Leroy) Papesh, Marilyn (William) Andree, and Nancy Pohlman; her brother-in-law, Robert Johnston; numerous nieces and nephews, and many dear friends.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents, William and Mary Louise Gehrke; her brothers, Robert Gehrke and William Gehrke; her sister, Beverly Johnston; an infant brother; her father-in law, Herman Seil and mother-in law, Agnes Seil; her sisters-in-law, Eleanor Coyne and Martella Gehrke; her brother-in-law, Douglas Pohlman; her nephews, Robert Gehrke and William Thomas Andree, her niece, Sharon DePratt.
Betty will be remembered as a generous, concerned and loving friend to many. Her proudest achievement was raising her children with her husband, Cy, and she did that with extraordinary commitment. When her grandchildren became a part of her life, Betty took great joy in her role as their grandmother.
All friends and relatives are invited to gather today, Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. until the Private Family Service begins at 11:00 a.m. at the Fred C. Dames Funeral Home, 3200 Black at Essington Rds., Joliet. Pastor Karl Hess officiating. Private interment Woodlawn Memorial Park. The family has requested that contributions in Betty's memory be made to the Radio Fund of St. Peter Lutheran Church or the Joliet Area Community Hospice.
