I remember him well even though I have not seen him in years. We shared many a good time at the old Downers Grove Gun Club. I began shooting trap there in 1969 two years after he had won the Grand American Handicap. I always delighted in listening to his comments of that day.
If heaven has trap shooting I know where I can find Herman.

It always seem too soon when we miss such a wonderful loving person but how comforting it is to have our happy memories and prayers fill our hearts forever. May, it also be comforting to remember that God will help us through our sorrows.(Psalms 55:22)

My linguistic skills are too limited to express adequately our affection for this extraordinary Man. Kind to the inner core, funny, cheerful, compassionate, and the list goes on and on. I would imagine that Soldier Field isn't big enough to hold all the people who loved Herman. Our prayers are with his family in these difficult days to come. What a privilege to know Herman and all of you. Dino, Karen, Dino III, Robbie Meucci

Relatives affectionately called Herman, "Fran." I knew him as "Uncle Fran" since my mother, Darlene Martin (Svoboda) was his wife's (Lorr Welch) sister.
For more than fifty years, Fran, Lorr and sometimes one or two of his hunting dogs would come to my mother's home for a Thanksgiving feast while a fire roared in the fireplace. Fran would bring a cooler of beer, wine, and our favorite appetizer, smoked pheasant which he cooked & smoked after fall hunting outings. Lorr would bake an amazing rum cake and a jello fruit salad.
For as long as I can remember, he had an infectious enthusiastic way of being. He connected easily with others with his sense of humor and interesting stories. He really enjoyed his broad interests: volunteer work and fundraising, passion for football/sports, hunting, fishing, travel and skeet shooting at the gun club.
We would watch the annual Chicago Bears and Detroit Lions game on Thanksgiving prior to our annual walk after dinner. One year Uncle Fran hit a patch of ice on the walk and we all watched in amazement as time seemed to slow down while he gracefully spinned on one foot circularly for more than one rotation with his arms extended sideways without falling. His athleticism would also be evident when he would win most pool games we played together regardless of how much I practiced a week prior the Thanksgiving. Losing as a kid was frustrating at times but with his playful kidding and good sportsmanship, we always had a lot of fun!
