Obituary of Alice Downey

Alice M. Downey (nee Mennie) Age 90, of Joliet, passed away Sunday, January 12, 2014 at Adventist Bolingbrook Hospital with her loving family by her side. Born June 18, 1923 in Blue Island, to John and Bessie (nee Halterman) Mennie, she was a graduate of Ottawa High School and St. Joseph Hospital School of Nursing. She worked as a registered nurse for St. Joseph Hospital and for Caterpillar, Inc. She was always devoted to taking care of her family, her home, her garden and her dogs. Surviving are two sons, Steven (late MaryEllen) Downey of Homer Glen and Jeffrey Downey of Joliet; four grandchildren, Michael Downey, Kerry Downey, Jessica (Lee) McPherson and Nyckole (Matthew) Herman; four great-grandchildren, Hannah Herman, and Daniel, Jordan and Donald Muthart; two sisters, Ruby (late Noel) Leitz and Joan (late Wayne) Harvey; one brother, Leonard (June) Mennie; numerous nieces, nephews and her canine companion, Joey. Preceded by her husband, Harold "Bill" Downey (1991); her parents; four brothers, Hubert, John, James and Vernon Mennie; one sister, Delores Tabor. Funeral Services for Alice M. Downey will be held on Friday, January 17, 2014 at 9:15 a.m. from the Fred C. Dames Funeral Home, 3200 Black at Essington Rds., Joliet to the Cathedral of St. Raymond Nonnatus for Mass at 10:00 a.m. Entombment Resurrection Mausoleum, Romeoville.
