Age 92. At rest Monday, April 7, 2014 at Presence Villa Franciscan Nursing Home. Born and raised in Chicago, residing on the Des Plaines River since 1975. She had an amazing, and fulfilling life. Her character was forged by the Great Depression, joining the Woman's Army Corp during WWII and serving as one of only 25,000 women in the U.S. military. She became a pharmacist in a time when women rarely attended college. She owned multiple businesses such as a grocery store, and later in life ran her marina. She had a quick wit, welcoming sense of humor and no nonsense attitude.
Surviving are her five children, Chris (Susan) Vassilopoulos, Harry Vassilopoulos of Wilmington, John (Isa) Vassilopoulos of Davies, FL, Denise Vassilopoulos of Chicago and Maria (Barry) Bursak of Chicago; six grandchildren, Dino, Allegra, Alex, Zoe, Aiden and Tatianna; one sister, Koula Kariotes of Lincolnwood, IL; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Preceded in death by her husband, Dino Vassilopoulos; parents, Christ and Thekle (nee Chelemengos) Stoyas; sisters, Olga, Vee, and Virginia; brothers, Jim, Tom and Bill.
Funeral Services for Mary C. Vassilopoulos will be Monday, April 14, 2014 at 8:45 a.m. from the Fred C. Dames Funeral Home, 3200 Black at Essington Rds., Joliet to All Saints Greek Orthodox Church for services at 9:30 a.m. with Fr. Stephen Bithos officiating. Interment Elmwood Cemetery in River Grove. Memorials in her name to All Saints Greek Orthodox Church or the Salvation Army would be appreciated. Visitation Sunday 2-9 p.m. with Trisagion Services at 5:30 p.m. at the funeral home.
