Sister Marianne Cardosi, OSF (Deborah)
Sister Marianne Cardosi, OSF (1930 - 2014) died at Our Lady of Angels Retirement Home, Joliet, Illinois, on May 14, 2014. A native of Kankakee, Illinois, she was the oldest of five children born to the late Victor and Pauline (Mussa) Cardosi. She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister Joan Cardosi. She is survived by her brother Robert (Pat) of Oro Valley, Arizona, and her sisters Paula of Springfield, Illinois, and Jacquelyn of Cheyenne, Wyoming. Sister Marianne was a treasured member of the Sisters of St. Francis of Mary Immaculate (Joliet) for 62 years.
Before entering religious life, Sister Marianne was a member of St. Rose Parish in Kankakee. She attended St. Joseph Seminary Grade School and graduated from St. Joseph Seminary High School. Sister Marianne earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the College of St. Francis (University of St. Francis) Joliet, a Master of Arts degree in history from DePaul University in Chicago and a Master of Arts degree in English Education from Olivet Nazarene University in Kankakee.
Sister Marianne served in the ministry of education for over 50 years. In 1954 she taught grade 6 at the Cathedral of St. Raymond Grade School in Joliet. From 1955 to 1959 she taught History and Religion at St. Francis Academy (now Joliet Catholic Academy). Other educational experiences took her to Marybrook Academy in Maumee, Ohio, St. Francis de Sales High School in Chicago, St. Mary High School in Columbus, Ohio, Cardinal Gibbons High School in Ft. Lauderdale, FL and St. Thomas Aquinas in Louisville, Ohio. In 1975 she became Director of the Dr. King Adult Education Center in Kankakee, a position she held until 1992. After retiring from full-time work in 1992, Sister Marianne continued as an A.B.E. teacher at the Kankakee County Training Center for the Disabled, a position she held until 2008 when she moved to Our Lady of Angels Retirement Home in Joliet, where she ministered as a peaceful presence with the other residents.
The wake for Sister Marianne will be at Our Lady of Angels Retirement Home, 1201 Wyoming Avenue, Joliet (Wyoming and Rt. 30) on Monday, May 19, 2014, from 2:00 - 6:45 p.m., with a Prayer Service at 4:45 p.m. and Mass of Christian Burial at 7:00 p.m. The funeral procession will leave from Our Lady of Angels on Tuesday morning, May 20, 2014, at 9:00 a.m. The Interment will take place at Resurrection Cemetery in Romeoville, Illinois.
