Sister Anne Flaska, OSF (1919 - 2014) died at Our Lady of Angels Retirement Home, Joliet, Illinois, on September 14. She was born in Chicago, Illinois, to the late Mary (Turcan) and John Flaska. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brothers, Rev. Joseph Flaska, SVD, and Frank and sisters Mildred Tylka, Rose Irene and Sister M. Cyrinus, OSF (Joliet Franciscan). She is survived by her nieces and nephews. Sister Anne was a treasured member of the Sisters of St. Francis of Mary Immaculate (Joliet) for 77 years.
Sister Anne attended Sacred Heart Grade School (Oakley and Huron Streets) in Chicago, Illinois, and McKinley Public School. She received both a Bachelor of Arts Degree and a certificate in Theology from the College of St. Francis, now University of St. Francis, Joliet, Illinois. She completed further studies at Loyola University (Chicago) and Mount Mary College in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
Sister Anne taught in the primary grades for forty-nine years in various schools throughout Ohio, Illinois and Pennsylvania. From 1969 to 1989 she taught first grade at Robert Fulton Public School and was appointed "Head Teacher" of the first and second graders. Because of her expertise in the Slovak language, she was able to translate English pre-school religion lessons into Slovak at Assumption Parish in Chicago and taught the Slovak language and culture to young children in Chicago. Her educational background and experience in the primary grades enabled her to assist other teachers through demonstrations of teaching techniques in reading, phonics and religion. From 1974 until 1998 Sister Anne ministered at Resurrection Parish (formerly St. Francis Xavier Church) in Chicago. In 1998 she became the Director of the Reading and Math Center at St. Francis Convent in Joliet. In 2003 she moved to Our Lady of Angels where she ministered as Sacristan.
The wake for Sister Anne will take place at Our Lady of Angels Retirement Joliet, IL, (Wyoming and Rt. 30) on Friday, September 19, from 2:00 - 6:45 p.m., with a Prayer Service at 4:45 p.m. and Mass of Christian Burial at 7:00 p.m. The Funeral Procession will leave from Our Lady of Angels on Saturday, September 20, at 9:00 a.m. The Interment will take place at Resurrection Cemetery in Romeoville, Illinois.
