Obituary of Gwendolyn Gonnam
Gwendolyn Walker Gonnam
Formerly of Verona, passed away Saturday, December 12, 2015 at Park Pointe Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center in Morris at the age of 93. Born November 8,1922 in Mazon Township, Grundy County, she was the daughter of the late Ollie L. Sr. and Olive L. (Davies) Walker. Educated in rural schools in the Mazon area, she graduated from Mazon Township High School with the Class of 1940. After graduating from Illinois Business College, she was employed with Bush Hatchery in Dwight, Mazon State Bank, the Grundy County Clerk's office and the Morris Daily Herald, retiring in 1990. On August 22, 1942 she married Jesse W. Gonnam in Victoria, TX where he was stationed with the U.S. Army Air Corps. After his return from WWII, Jesse and Gwen farmed in the Verona area for over 40 years. After retiring, they enjoyed traveling in their RV, driving to Alaska in 1979 and making many trips to the southwest where they spent the winters. During their years together, they visited every state except Hawaii. Gwen enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles and monthly card club with friends. She was a member of the Park Street Congregational Church in Mazon and also belonged to the Norman Homemakers Club.
Survivors include one daughter, Beverly Anne (Steven) Thomason of Haslet, TX; two sons, Bill (Barbara Gabel) and Jim (Deb) Gonnam, both of rural Verona; nine grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; one sister, Betty (Dan) Beal; two sisters-in-law, Lee Walker and Jean Wooden.
Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Jesse in 2002; two grandsons and five brothers, Robert, Donald, Dayre, William and Ollie Walker.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staffs of Joliet Area Community Hospice and Park Pointe Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center for all the care they had provided in Mom's final days.
Funeral services will be Tuesday, December 15, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at the Fred C. Dames Funeral Home, 1201 West Route 6 (at Deerpath Dr.), Morris. Pastor Tyler Carrel officiating. Interment Ward Cemetery, Verona. Memorials in her name to Park Street Congregational Church, Ward Cemetery, Joliet Area Community Hospice or Park Pointe Healthcare and Rehabilitation Activity Fund would be appreciated.
