Obituary of Bernard Stonich

Bernard Charles Stonich Bernard "Bernie" Stonich, age 91, of Plainfield, passed away peacefully, March 10, 2016 at home with family at his side. Born August 28, 1924 in Joliet, to Joseph and Justine (nee Kracker) Stonich, he was a graduate of Joliet Township High School. A World War II veteran of the United States Navy, Bernie served aboard the aircraft carrier USS Saginaw Bay in the South Pacific. After returning home, he started a career as a salesman eventually retiring from Illinois Wine and Spirits. Following his military service, Bernie dedicated his life to veterans and their needs. He was a member and former Commander of the Plainfield American Legion Marne Post #13, member and former Commander of Cantigny VFW Post #367 where he served many years as the Service Officer. Bernie was the recipient of numerous awards and was recognized for his service to veterans and their families. Many veterans will remember him for providing them transportation to and from Hines Veterans Administration Hospital. Bernie was also active in the Associated Clubs of Greater Joliet and St. Mary Nativity Parish. Surviving are his beloved wife of 69 years, Shirley M. (nee Pubentz) Stonich; his children, Deborah (Jack) McInerney of Westmont, and Duane (Robin) Stonich of Joliet; four grandchildren, Brock (Jennifer) Stonich, Brent (Samantha) Stonich, Cara McInerney and Megan McInerney; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and nine brothers and sisters. Funeral services for Bernard C. Stonich will be held Tuesday, March 15, 2016 at 10:15 a.m. from the Fred C. Dames Funeral Home, 3200 Black at Essington Rds., Joliet, to St. Mary Nativity Catholic Church for Mass at 11:00 a.m. Interment will be in Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery where full military honors will be accorded. Visitation will be held TUESDAY MORNING from 9:00 a.m. until time of services at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials in his name to Midwest Shelter For Homeless Veterans would be appreciated. For information (815) 741-5500.
