Sister M. Karla Zdenek, OSF (1929 - 2016) died at Our Lady of Angels Retirement Home on May 8, 2016. She was born in Cleveland, Ohio, to the late Marie and Frank Zdenek. She has one sister, Dorothy Wochele, who currently lives in Brooklyn, Ohio. Sister Karla was a treasured member of the Sisters of St. Francis of Mary Immaculate (Joliet) for 68 years.
Sister Karla was a member of St. Procop Parish in Cleveland. She attended the Parish grade school and graduated from the Parish High School. She received her Bachelor's Degree from the College of St. Francis (University of St. Francis) in Joliet, Illinois.
Sister Karla ministered in the field of elementary education for 31 years, serving in schools in Aurora, Chicago and Des Plaines, Illinois; Ashland, Cleveland, Columbus and Mansfield, Ohio; Muskegon, Michigan and Bayfield, Wisconsin. In 1983 she began the ministry of service to her religious congregation through clerical work in the administrative offices and service to her religious sisters.
Sister Karla's many years of volunteer service to the elderly through Catholic Charities Retired and Senior Volunteer Program, brought her many awards from the Senior Services Center of Will County. Her ministry of providing rides to those who needed transportation to maintain their independence brought much joy and hope into their daily lives.
The wake for Sister Karla will be at Our Lady of Angels Retirement Home, 1201 Wyoming Avenue, Joliet, IL (Wyoming and Rt. 30) on Thursday, May 12, 2016, from 2:00 - 6:45 p.m., with a Prayer Service at 4:45 p.m. and Mass of Christian Burial at 7:00 p.m. The Funeral Procession will leave from Our Lady of Angels on Friday morning, May 13, 2016, at 9:00 a.m. The Interment will take place at Resurrection Cemetery in Romeoville, Illinois. Memorials may be made to the Sisters of St. Francis of Mary Immaculate, 1433 Essington Road, Joliet, IL 60435.
