This is a huge loss. Chris was one of the warmest, most sparkling people I have ever known. He was a wonderful sportsman, painter, conservationist and friend. I have missed him each day since he moved from Philadelphia. My thoughts are with his family.

I was fortunate to meet and become friendly with Chris when he lived in Philadelphia some years back. We sparked up a friendship almost immediately and enjoyed playing spirited tennis together frequently. He was always my first choice as a doubles partner and to this day, I thank him for carrying me across the finish line in so many matches. Thanks to his incredible patience, positive wit and athletic skill - he made all those sessions so enjoyable and unforgettable. Along with his loved ones and the rest signed in here, I will miss him miss him greatly. Sincere wishes to Jennifer and his family for much strength and healing in this difficult time. Chris, you made this world a better place - RIP my friend.

Sincere condolences to Chris' family, friends and his community. I hired Chris, at Charley Allers Restaurant in the 1980's, as a waiter when he was in graduate school at Northwestern. He was a great guy and always had a smile on his face. He will be missed by many. Kindest Regards, John

"Condolences" is a better word than I realized until a couple of years ago. It does not mean to give sympathy as I used to think. It means that we choose "to be sad (dolere) with (con)" the family and friends of Chris at this time. Being sad with others is to say that those people have value for us and that the person we have lost causes all of us to be sad together because we have lost him. Chris made our community a better place in which to live in the few years that he was here here. He brought many different groups together and made us all feel welcome and important in the common effort to live lives that respect what nature has given us and enhance that world for others who come after us. Chris was able to bring a lot of diverse people and elements together to move the conservation agenda forward. I am thankful that I had a chance to work with and get to know Chris. I will miss him. I am sad, with the others who appreciated Chris, to have lost him after such a brief stay in Harbor Country. Condolences Dan Coffey

I was only beginning to know Chris as a colleague in conservation, but already had tremendous respect for the work he was doing in SW Michigan. I'm sorry I didn't have the opportunity to know him better, so I could have learned more about this obviously complex man. He will be missed by his colleagues in the conservation community.
