Joan I. McDevitt
(nee Burke)
Age 82, of Shorewood, IL and formerly of Channahon, IL and Chicago's southwest side, passed peacefully Wednesday, June 15, 2016.
Born in Chicago, IL to the late Ethel (nee Riley) and Edward Burke she was a longtime southwest side resdent and parishioner of St. Daniel the Prophet Catholic Church until relocating to Will County in 1993.
Beloved wife of the late Jeremiah "Jerry" McDevitt (2006); loving mother of Fr. Patrick J. McDevitt, C.M. and Teresa G. "Tracy" (Robert) Follis; devoted grandmother of Edward J. Follis, Margaret Mae "Maggie" (Nicholas) Vargo, Mary Kate (Christopher) Smith and Patrick M. Follis; proud great-grandmother of Grace, James; Bridget and Audrey; dear sister of Frank (Virginia) Burke, Steven L. (Kathleen) Burke, the late Ethel Shavier, the late Edward Burke and the late Harvey Burke.
Joan, a retired administrative assistant, was formerly employed by Stouffer's and as an electrolysis assistant. She enjoyed volunteering at Presence St. Joseph Medical Center and was a former active parishioner of St. Ann Catholic Church in Channahon
until moving to Shorewood a few years ago and joining Holy Family Parish.
Mrs. McDevitt will be remembered fondly as a supportive loving wife, wonderful mother and a devoted "Nana". She possessed a great sense of style and was a gracious host who had an eye for detail. Her family was her passion, fueled by her religion and deep faith in the Lord.
Visitation will take place Monday, June 20, 2016 from 2 - 8 p.m. with the wake service beginning at 7 p.m. at the Fred C. Dames Funeral Home, 3200 Black Rd. (at Essington Rd.) Joliet. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, June 21, 2016 at St. Vincent DePaul Catholic Church, 1010 W. Webster Avenue (at Sheffield), Chicago where all can gather from 10:00 a.m. until the Mass of the Resurrection at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow in Queen of Heaven Cemetery, Hillside.
