Thomas J. McGrath, M.D
Thomas J. McGrath, M.D., age 84, of Joliet. Peacefully at rest in his home on July 17, 2016. Born on June 2, 1932 in Hammond, Indiana.
Attended Rehn, Saint Patrick's, and Saint Raymond's School, Joliet Township High School (Class of 1949), Miami University (Class of 1952), and University of Illinois School of Medicine in Chicago. Completed his Internship and Residency at Cook County Hospital, specializing in obstetrics and gynecology.
Served as a flight surgeon at the United States Air Force Academy. Returned to Joliet in 1960 to specialize in women's health. Founding partner in the Joliet Medical Group. Served as Medical Director then later Chief of Staff at Saint Joseph's Hospital. Volunteered at Will/Grundy County Medical Clinic. He enjoyed many years serving others in private practice until his retirement in 1996. In his retirement years, he served on the Board of Directors at St. Joseph's Hospital and University of St. Francis. He also served as Medical Director for Captive Insurance.
In addition to his passion for medicine, Tom enjoyed sailing, flying, playing the piano, golfing, fishing, reading, and traveling. But none of his interests was as important as spending time with his family.
Survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Joan (nee Lynch), and his children, Michael (Robin), Thomas, Kathleen (Thomas) Boucher, Jane (Timothy) Schmig, Laura, Patrick (Stacey), and Elizabeth (Michael) Ryan. Grandchildren, Christina (Justin) Spring, Thomas and Michael McGrath, Anne, Kathleen, and Claire Schmig, Margaret, John, and Patrick McGrath, and Mary, Hannah, and Michael Ryan. Great grandfather of Kathryn Spring. Brother to Suzanne Whalen and Priscilla (Robert) Borgstrom. Brother-in-law to Virginia Bourg and John (Peggi) Lynch. Uncle to many nieces and nephews.
Preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Irene (nee Malo) McGrath; and brothers-in-law, Martin Whalen and Henry Bourg.
Funeral services for Dr. Thomas McGrath will be held Wednesday, July 20, 2016 at 9:00 a.m. from the Fred C. Dames Funeral Home, 3200 Black at Essington Rds., Joliet to the Church of St. Jude, 2212 McDonough Street, Joliet, for Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Interment will be in Woodlawn Memorial Park II. In lieu of flowers, memorials in his name to the Church of St. Jude would be appreciated. Visitation Tuesday, from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
