Obituary of Juan Martinez

Juan Martinez (January 31, 1965 - October 19, 2016) Juan Martinez, 51, passed away on October 19, 2016. Juan was born in Dolores Hidalgo, Guanajuato, Mexico to Marcos Martinez and Juana Barajas. At age 14 Juan came to the United States. Though he was seriously ill with end-stage renal disease, and later transplant failure, he worked relentlessly to learn the English language and graduate from high school on time. He was extremely proud of his efforts of putting himself through college and earning his Bachelor of Science Degree. That work ethic, determination and love of work was a hallmark of his life. Juan went on to work in the insurance industry, eventually working for Sedgwick Claims Management Services. He enjoyed his job and his co-workers. Juan was constantly reading and striving to learn about a vast number of subjects. His work and co-workers kept him going, even when his illness became harder to bear. He enjoyed collecting vinyl records and vintage stereos, photography, farming and the arts, among other past times. He loved classical music and theater but could cheer as well as anyone for his favorite soccer team (futbol) or tennis player. One of Juan's true passions was cooking. He truly loved cooking for people and relished in their enjoyment of his food. He will be dearly missed and will always be remembered as a loving husband, son, brother, and friend. Juan is survived by his beloved wife of 17 years, Mary (Hoerrmann); parents Marcos Martinez and Juana Barajas both of Mexico; brother Marcos Martinez; sister Alejandrina; half - sister Gabby, step-sisters Chris and Laura, many nieces and nephews; and loving extended family members. Funeral services for Juan Martinez will be Saturday, October 29, 2016, 5:00 p.m. at the Fred C. Dames Funeral Home, 3200 Black at Essington Rds., Joliet. In lieu of flowers, memorials in his name to Apollo's Fire at apollosfire.org would be appreciated.
